KARDELEN ( Galanthus elwesii )

Kardelen, with its pure white flowers, is perhaps one of the most familiar bulbous plants that blossoms at the end of winter. In our country, there are about 10 species known as kardelen and grow wild. Galanthus elwesii was first found in 1874 in the mountains near Izmir and introduced to scientific world. It can be seen in the Northeast, West, and Southeast Anatolia as well. It grows in the rich humus in open spaces among the forests of ardiç (Junierus) and çam (Pinus) trees, and on the rocky parts. It flourishes in cool and humid areas at the heights of 900-1000 meters. It is not affected by temperatures below 15 degrees Centigrade. It likes places that get partial sunlight. With two greyish green leaves that are 10-15 cm. long and 2-3 cm. wide, it is one of the tallest kardelen kinds. The end of their leaves is like a cap. It blossoms from January to March. It is the first in the export list of bulbous flowers.
